The Formula

This engine computes the expected cash total using the standard retail reconciliation equation. At the Kmart on Telegraph Road, I ran this calculation every Friday at 10:47 PM, before the security guard locked the front doors.

Expected = Opening Float + Total Sales − Total Returns − Discounts + Non-Cash Adjustments

Variance = Actual Count − Expected

Pass/Fail: |Variance| ≤ $0.50

Threshold: Any variance exceeding fifty cents triggers a recount. Anything over two dollars requires manager override and incident report. These aren't suggestions—they're the bolts holding the store together.
